14:19 punishment: Chattah, 'sin,' as Prov. 10:16; 'Punishment' may be alluded to as what represents and marks the sin: see Lam. 3:39; 4:6; bearing the sin on himself in punishment, something like the sense of sin-offering. It must be so taken here; but so as to charge the measure and character of sin, not merely the fact of punishment. It is governmentally putting the sin upon him instead of taking it off: see Lam. 4:22.
