Introduction to the Electronic Format:

The original version of this text is the Project Gutenberg Douay-Rheims Challoner Version of the Bible. Since that version had some obvious typographical errors, I downloaded a second copy from Dan Connolly's Douay-Rheims Home Page and did a comparison with that version (noting its own OCR problems), and making corrections as seemed appropriate. This was done without a local hard-copy of the Bible for double checking, so this should not be considered a proofread version. It may be better than some other sources due to the nature of the corrective work. The reader will have to be the judge. As with all of our site Bibles and References, if you find an error, please let us know.

Our Changes

We provide several Bibles on our site, and allow the users to select the Bible to use for monthly Bible reading, full year Bible reading, links from references, and parallel Bible displays. In order for these features to work properly, all versions of the Bible on our site must have reasonably consistent verse numbering. Since the majority of the Bibles are configured with the KJV or Authorized verse ordering, other Bibles are modified to conform to that standard. This is not done to offend anyone, however we needed some means of providing the consistent tagging across each Bible and this was the chosen method. We hope that the usefulness of linking to expected scriptures will outweigh the inconvenience of not having occasional verses in the expected printed edition location. The verse splits are still not exact between the Vulgate/Douay-Rheims and other versions, however, but at least there should be no broken links. If a verse doesn't appear to match the expected content, try increasing the width of the context display and read a verse above and below. You will probably find what you are looking for.

The following are the modifications we have made to the verse numbering of the Douay-Rheims Challoner Version of the Bible. For the original source, please contact the Project Gutenberg web site.

Genesis 5:31 is split into two verses in the KJV at the sentence division.
Genesis 49:32 is not present in the Douay version. We substitute a blank verse.
Genesis 50:22 is split into two verses in the KJV at the first sentence division, moving all subsequent verses down one in number.
Exodus 40:12-13 is split into separate verses describing Aaron and his sons in the KJV. Thus we provide blank verse 14 and 15 here where the sons are described in the KJV so the remainder of the chapter will be lined up.
Leviticus 26:45 is split into two verses in the KJV at the second sentence division.
Numbers 11:34 is split into two verses in the KJV at the sentence division.
Numbers 13:1 is Numbers 12:16 in the KJV. Numbers 13 is renumbered with one fewer verse.
Numbers 20:28 and 29 are combined in the KJV.
Numbers 30:1 is 29:40 in the KJV. Numbers 30 is renumbered with one fewer verse.
Joshua 4:23 and 24 are combined in the KJV.
Joshua 5:14 and 15 are combined in the KJV.
Joshua 21:36 and 37 are both split into separate verses in the KJV.
Judges 5:31 and 32 are combined in the KJV.
Judges 21:24 is split into two verses in the KJV at the sentence division.
1 Samuel 20:42 and 43 are combined in the KJV.
1 Samuel 24:1 is 23:29 in the KJV. 1 Samuel 24 is renumbered with one fewer verse.
2 Samuel 13:38 is split into two verses in the KJV at the sentence division.
1 Kings 22:43 and 44 are combined in the KJV.
1 Chronicles 11:46 is split into two verses in the KJV.
1 Chronicles 20:7 is split into two verses in the KJV at the sentence division.
Nehemiah 3:30 is split into two verses in the KJV at the sentence division.
Nehemiah 12:33 is split into two verses in the KJV.
Esther 10:4 to 16:24 are not in the KJV. The various extra pieces of text are moved around in the source to match where they should exist and are given letter designations. Thus the remainder of the verses line up.
Job 16:4 and 5 are combined in the KJV.
Job 39:31 to the end of the chapter are part of chapter 40 in the KJV.
Job 40:20 to the end of the chapter are part of chapter 41 in the KJV.
Job 42:16 is split into two verses in the KJV.
Most Psalms are numbered differently than in the KJV. In particular, many verse number one references are really part of the heading in the KJV. In some occasions, the first two verses which are numbered in the Douay-Rheims are part of the heading. These have all been moved to sub-headings. In addition, be aware that there are many places where the verses split at different locations without affecting the verse numbering itself. The majority of these haven't been changed at this point in time unless there was substantial problems with the verse numbering. When reading the Psalms, increase your context if it appears that the verse doesn't match as expected. Finally, the KJV follows the Hebrew numbering, and this results in different Chapter divisions altogether. These points are noted in Challoner's notes, and used in the renumbering.
Psalms 2:12 and 2:13 are combined in the KJV.
Psalms 3:1 is missing - text substituted from another source.
Psalms 13:2 and 3 are combined in the KJV. 13:5 is split into two verses in the KJV.
Psalms 20:8 is split into two verses in the KJV.
Psalms 29:10 is split into two verses in the KJV.
Psalms 43:4 through 6 are split differently in the KJV resulting in two verses.
Psalms 44:21 is split into two verses in the KJV.
Psalms 53:1 and 2 are combined in the KJV.
Psalms 56:10 is split into two verses in the KJV.
Psalms 72:1 is split into two verses in the KJV.
Psalms 100:1 is split into two verses in the KJV.
Psalms 109:1 is split into two verses in the KJV.
Psalms 114 contains both Psalms 114 and 115 - these are split according to the KJV.
Psalms 126:6 and 7 are combined in the KJV.
Psalms 136:27 is omitted in the KJV and combined with 26 here.
Psalms 146:1 is split into two verses in the KJV.
Psalms 150:5 is split into two verses in the KJV.
Ecclesiastes 4:17 is 5:1 in the KJV.
Ecclesiastes 7:1 is 6:12 in the KJV.
Song of Solomon 1:1 is missing in the Douay-Rheims.
Song of Solomon 5:17 is 6:1 in the KJV.
Isaiah 45:23 and 24 are combined in the KJV.
Isaiah 46:11 is split into two verses in the KJV.
Jeremiah 37:4 is split into two verses in the KJV.
Ezekiel 2:9 is split into two verses in the KJV.
Daniel 3:24-90 are not in the KJV, The various extra pieces of text in the Vulgate are referenced by letter designations here and in the Vulgate where they don't match the KJV. Thus the remainder of the verses line up.
Daniel 3:98-100 are 4:1-3 in the KJV.
Daniel 13:1 to 14:42 are not in the KJV.
Hosea 2:23 and 24 are combined in the KJV.
Hosea 14:1 is 13:16 in the KJV.
Amos 6:10 and 11 are combined in the KJV.
Amos 9:14 is split into two verses in the KJV.

In addition, the following textual changes were made by comparing our previous Rheims NT and other on-line sources with the Gutenberg Douay-Rheims Bible as noted above. I don't know the original source of the electronic Rheims NT I had and it was certainly not error free. It may be more recent than the Douay-Rheims Challoner edition. I don't have access to an original Challoner edition to tell which is correct. The changes listed below seemed minor and increased the readability of the text. Where a choice had to be made in wording which wasn't obvious - I picked whichever wording was closest to the AV/KJV as that is a more commonly searched Bible - weighing the choice somewhat based on the total number of errors in the book itself. Perhaps this had been done in the entering of corrections into the original Rheims NT we had, and thus the source has diverged twice toward the AV/KJV. If you can verify the correctness or incorrectness of a particular listed change, please let the web servant know. Also let us know of any other errors you find in any part of the text.
